OPEN UP LAND OF OPPORTUNITY FOR FIRST HOME OWNERS

April 30, 2026

88% of Queensland could be opened up to First Home Owners overnight, Leader of the KAP and state
Member for Traeger Robbie Katter has said.

The KAP are reaffirming calls for first home owner concessions to be made available for existing dwellings in
‘remote’ and ‘very remote’ areas of Queensland, as Queensland’s Parliamentary Committee examines
government legislation to amend the First Home Owner Grant and Other Home Owner Grants Act 2000
(FHOG Act).

“Instead of just making technical amendments, we have an opportunity to take housing pressure off our
cities on the coast, and breathe life back into rural and remote communities,” Mr Katter said.

“Communities across Queensland, outside of our major cities and coastal areas have housing stock with so
much potential. Why can’t we incentivise First Home Buyers to look west and see what they could achieve?

“The KAP is exploring amendments that can be made to the bill to make the necessary changes,” he said.
Flinders Mayor Kate Peddle supported the policy saying towns like Hughenden provided young people a
world of opportunity.

“We’ve got business, professional, and lifestyle opportunities that are out of reach for those trying to scrape
it together in the major centres,” Mayor Peddle said.

“We’ve got houses here that would be fantastic for energetic couples to have a crack at, do some renos, and
achieve the dream of owning a home in a vibrant community,” she said.

The Member for Traeger said he was pleasantly surprised at how much remote work has opened up
opportunities for people to live in more remote communities and work professional jobs that used to be
exclusively city based.

“You’d struggle to think even 10 years ago that a large construction firm in Townsville could have their health
and safety coordinator and office roles based in Hughenden, but today they can. Those staff can enjoy the
lifestyle and opportunities of North West Queensland,” the KAP leader said.

“When I was first starting out in business more than 20 years ago, I moved to Mount Isa because I saw an
opportunity, and I was keen to give it a crack. I want others living closer to the coast to have the incentive to
do the same.

“With our cities bursting at the seams, why are we denying first time buyers the chance to explore the
opportunities outside the big centres.
