Voice of the North West
Robbie Katter is the North West’s voice to the Queensland Parliament. As Leader of Katter’s Australian Party and Member for Traeger, he fights relentlessly for families, workers, industry development, farmers and small business owners across the vast Traeger electorate and beyond.
With real-world experience in mining, property valuation and running a small business, Robbie understands the struggles North Queenslanders face. From tackling crime and defending local industries to securing jobs and holding the Government accountable, Robbie is committed to standing up for the place he calls home.
To travel across one of Queensland’s largest electorates, Robbie holds a current pilot licence enabling him to reach all the small towns and outposts he is proud to represent.
“WE’RE ON THE WRONG TRACK.”
The government’s 10% rail subsidy sounds good, but it’s missing the point.
I say the “root cause” of the issue is the highly constrictive operating environment imposed on Queensland Rail.
Right now the Mount Isa line operates under rules that make rail artificially expensive.
You can’t even backload spare capacity at a cheaper rate… so companies put the ore on trucks instead.
That means more heavy vehicles on the Flinders Highway, more road damage and higher costs for everyone.
A short-term subsidy might help for four years, but after that we’re back at square one.

The government is bragging about delivering the Olympic dream and locking in permanent 50 cent fares. That is $423 million a year so Brisbane commuters can travel across the city for pocket change.
Good for them.
But in the North West, the Gulf and the Cape we do not catch trains to get to hospitals, courts or specialists. We catch planes.
Those flights are not 50 cents. They are $500, $700 and sometimes $800 just to access basic services.
So here is a simple question.
If the government can guarantee fixed public transport fares for city residents, why can they not guarantee fixed airfares for regional Queenslanders?
If you live outside the public transport network you should have the same certainty to access essential services.
Set a permanent regional airfare, say $250 to major service centres, and finally treat regional Queenslanders like equal citizens, not second class ones.
Access to healthcare, justice and government services should not depend on your postcode.
